Why is good drainage Important?
In any soils that remain wet for long periods all the air spaces fill with water, smothering and drowning essential bacteria and plant roots. Any plant roots that do develop in wet soils develop very close to the surface as they do not have to grow far to reach water. If the soil dries out quickly, due to a shortage water, these roots collapse and plant dies.
Cold, wet soils slow down the growth and maturity of plants whereas warmer soils give healthy strong root growth and development so that flowers and fruit mature earlier.
Good drainage will save plant losses that could mount up to being very expensive and disheartening.
Good drainage and choosing the right plant to suit your conditions will make gardening much easier and more successful.
