Where to Grow Pelargoniums

As a rule, we tend to grow pelargoniums on patios, balconies, and indoors, whereas geraniums are only grown in the garden.

On patios and balconies

Most pelargoniums are kept in window boxes, on windowsills, on patios, or on balconies during the warm, frost-free months of the year. These are usually pelargoniums hubrids of the zonal or hanging varieties.

Indoors

Regal wild, scented-leafed, and fancy-leafed pelargoniums will flourish indoors and seem to thrive even in the dry atmosphere of centrally heated rooms. Regal pelargoniums, specially, are ofeten considered to be true house plants because of these characteristics. During the warm part of the year, however, these plants are quite happy to be moved outside, where they will flourish in the sunshine.

In the garden

Geranium hybrids are hardy garden shrubs. They develop a widely spreading root system but will thrive equally well in large plant containers. Pelargonium hybrids and fancy leafed pelargoniums can be planted in flower beds during the summer months. Because they are not hardy, howver, they will not survive frosts and must be indoors before these occur.
