Watering HousePlants

houseplant-careThe majority of indoor plants require much less moisture at their roots, so should be watered by filling the space between the rim of the pot and the surface of the compost. As sluggish compost is particularly unsuitable to all potted plants it is important that water should drain away fairly freely through the bottom of the pot. To encourage this with plants which have been in their pots for some time it may be necessary to use a pencil or pointed stick to break up the hard crust of soil that will have formed on the top of the pot. Need for rapid drainage is another reason for ensuring that plants do not actually stand in water, so any water that may accumulate in saucer or drip tray should be tipped away. The only exceptions to this rule would be water plants, such as cyperus, or those which require a great deal of moisture.
