Tobacco
This is Nicotiana tabacum and isgrown on a commercial scale in parts of Conn.,Pa., and from Va. southward. There is even anarea in southern Canada where the plants arecultivated. There are of course many varieties,the leaves varying in texture and used fordifferent kinds of tobacco. Since it is a tropicalplant, seedlings are started in the greenhouseand set out in areas where the high summertemperatures are conducive to its growing well.Tobacco grown in Conn. is mostly for wrappingcigars—a very fine type of tobacco which isgrown under large cloth houses that give partialshade and raise the humidity about the plants sothe leaves will develop perfectly. This results ina thinner, smooth, small-veined and larger leafwhich is most desirable for wrapping cigars.Ky. grovvs much pipe tobacco; Va. and theCarolinas specialize in growing cigarettetobacco.
