Planting Styles
Planting styles are very much a matter of personal taste, and each of us will have our own ideas about what constitutes an ideal garden. Styles themselves, however, can vary over time, and they may, in any case, be influenced or even determined by existing planting within a garden or by the conditions in terms of factors such as soil type and climate that obtain in a particular area.
It takes time for many plants to achieve their full potential and for the effect of a particular plant or group of plants to create the impression intended. Planning from the outset is important, however, not only to impose your chosen style but to make sure that the plants needed to create a particular style have the space in which to develop. Failing to consider the ultimate height and spread of plants leads to more mistakes in creating a garden than any other, and putting such errors right can be costly if you have to move or remove a large tree or shrub.
