Planting and Staking Standard Roses
Plant standard roses in exactly the same way as other roses, but without burying the bud union at the base of the main stem below the ground. Check that the final soil level corresponds with the old soil mark. Firm staking is essential. The stake is normally put in place before the roots are covered with soil, at the same time as the rose is placed in its hole. Drive a strong stake into the base of the hole for about 50cm (20in), until it feels firm. It should then reach to the top of the stem, just below the top graft union. Complete the planting and tie the stem firmly to the top and middle part of the stake with rubber tree ties.
1. Drive in the wooden stake, next to the root-ball, and check that it
conies up to the level of the graft union at the top of die stem.
2. Plant the rose so that the earth reaches the old soil mark, and with the stake on the windward side so the rose does not lean into it in strong gusts.
3. Attach the stern firmly to the top of the stake with a rubber tree tic, just
below the graft union. Secure with a second tie halfway up the stake.
