Orchid Germination

orchid_1When the seed-sowing has been successful and germination has occurred, the surface of the jelly where the seed was sown within the sterilised container becomes covered with a mass of miniature green spheres. Each one is a protocorm of green chlorophyll representing the orchids of the future. At this stage you can remove the protocorms to further flasks containing a stronger growing medium which have already been prepared as previously described. The flask is unstoppered and the young protocorms removed under sterile conditions and placed in a sterile dish. Any that have become stuck together can be carefully separated and any that do not look healthy can be discarded. From these mother flasks which may contain thousands of green protocorms, about 25-30 will be resown on the surface of the jelly in new flasks. At this stage of reflasking retain more than you require to allow for loss through contamination. A few of the mother flasks may be kept until the reflaskcd seedlings are growing successfully in case something goes wrong. It is better to overproduce at this stage and discard later to achieve the required quantity.
