The pale, grey-green leaves, the white flowers, and the sweet scent are Alba attributes. The flower opens From a slender bud (note the long, leafy sepals) to reveal a mass of creamywhite petals spiralling around a button eye. Later it reflexes into a pompon, leaving a hole at the centre. The flowers come in loose clusters of 3-9 and look well against the neat, soft leaves. The plant is tall, hardy, healthy, and vigorous, and will grow to 5m (I 6.4ft) if trained as a climber. Its supple stems and lack of thorns make it easy to train.
