How do I know if my garden will need a special drainage system laid?

Before planting any lawns or garden beds it is essential to check the drainage in your pic3garden. Both sandy and clay soils can in certain situations require extra drainage to supplement natural water run-off.

Clay soils and low lying blocks, in particular, often need agricultural drains laid, because the topsoil and subsoil are not porous enough or do not slope sufficiently for excess water to drain away. Autumn is th ebest time to check drainage as the soil is damp and easy to dig. Early spring, when some of the excess moisture from the winter rain has drained away, is another rime for laying drains.

A simple method to check whether your drainage is adequate is to dig a number of holes at least 75 cm deep after heavy rain. Cover and protect the tops of the holes so no water can deain in from the surface, then watch the level of the water stays near the surface for more than a few hours of agricultural drainage pipes will be necessary.
