Hanging Basket

Usually made of sturdywire, these are excellent for displaying pendulousplants. They can be used in greenhouse, homeor porch, the only difficulty with them beingthat they do drip and somehow one shouldfigure out a way of controlling the drip of waterresulting when they are watered.

Planting is simple. Slabs of green sheet mossare put on the inside of the basket facingoutward. Then a rich soil (equal parts of loam, compost or rotted manure and leaf mold) isplaced in the basket and the plants inserted. It isbest to have some plant in the center that will bemore or less upright or vase-shaped in habit togive a good form to the finished product.Watering most be done every day or so and itmay be with a little ingenuity one can over-come the drip problem. A piece of polyethylenefilm placed carefully in the bottom quarter ofthe basket, possibly with some broken crockeryput in for drainage with the soil placed on topof that does work if one is careful not to applytoo much water. Covering the inside of thebasket completely with polyethylene may notprove helpful in some cases because the plantroots need air and heavy watering may reducethe amount of air in the soil. Many immerse theentire basket occasionally or put it out in therain in order to give it a thorough soaking.
