Designing Your Herb Garden

herbs1Deciding on the right style for your herb garden depends largely on your individual needs. The many uses herbs can be put to can make this
choice for you. There are culinary, medicinal, traditional, formal, aromatic and even informal layouts. You can even go for a historical garden or plant to a theme, such as a paradise, Shakespearean or butterfly garden. The theme, or use, usually dictates the style, and from there you can develop your ideas and add other features.
Herb gardens are never dull. Often the considered opinion is, that because many of the plants have short flowering times and die down in the winter, then a herb garden is of limited interest. This merely shows lack of imagination. The fact that herb gardens have been cultivated since early times clearly demonstrates their versatility and durability.
Not everyone has a garden, but many flat-dwellers have either a balcony or a window sill. Very small gardens often have paved areas for sitting out, with not much room for anything other than a table and chairs. Yet such spaces can be utilised to best effect with moveable pots and hanging baskets, as well as the popular window boxes. Herbs can be grown quite successfully this way, even though they never reach their full potential, and an attractive and useful display can be achieved for quite a small outlay.
