Cesar, named after the French artist and sculptor Cesar Saldaccini (1921-98), is a vigorous Floribunda that can be grown as a short climber or trained as a shrub. It looks distinctly modern: the broad, very frilly petals fold themselves over the centre of the flower, so that there is a startling contrast between the dark pink upper surfaces and pale apricot backs. The flowers open quickly, and arc round and fiat, but they seldom open out completely. They Fare surprisingly well in wet weather, but still give their best display in warm, dry conditions. ‘fhe yellow tinge fades so that the older flowers develop a contrast of pink and white that is very marked. The plant grows lankily to 2m (6.6ft) as a shrub, but arches over under the weight of its flowers, which come in clusters of 3-9, so it is best pruned as a shrub or trained over a support. It makes a fine short climber in hot climates. It has healthy foliage and is a reliable repeat-flowerer.
