Amaranthus
Amaranthus is a group of annuals, some of which are vicious weeds and others of which are grown for the brightly colored foliage and heavy flower spikes,the flowers of some species being a brilliant red.All are easily grown and easily propagated by seeds. Some are used in other countries for greens. Leaves are alternate.
albus (graecizans) 3′ annual Tumbleweed
A weed spreading by seeds, native to the mid-western U.S., but now also a weed in eastern North America. The stems are greenish purpleand prostrate; the leaves are alternate. Flowersare in short, dense, axillary clusters. Bloomsfrom June to Aug. The leaves of this weed fallin the autumn, and when the plant dies thewind blows the stalks out of the ground and onthe flat western prairies they are blown into balls, forming the familiar Tumbleweed.
caudatus 5′ annual Iove-lies-bleeding
The leaves of this annual are red; the flowersform a red rope like spike in the summer. Native to the tropics.
hybridus 6′ annual Green Amaranth
This is a weed introduced from tropical America, but not naturalized across North America. It is similar to A. retrollexus, but is not so rough in texture and is of a deeper greencolor. The variety erytbrostachyus. Prince’s-feather. has red or brownish-red, showy paniclesand the leaves are usually reddish. This variety is truly an ornamental, blooming from July to Sept. and frequently used in flower arrangements.

Actually a native to tropical America, it has become an annual weed all over the world. The stem is stout and branches at the top. The alternate leaves are triangular, broadest near the base. The dense green flower clusters are terminal or axillary, 5-2 in. long. This is one of the commonest of weeds in gardens, blooming from July to Sept. The roots are red.
tricolor 4′ annual Josephs-coat
Large oval leaves, variegated green, yellow and red, often used as a house plant because of its brilliantly colored and variable foliage. Thereare many variations appearing in this species,some of which have been named. The main leaves are 21-24 in. wide, but some of the varieties bear smaller leaves.
